A Movie Review

Over the weekend, dh, the big kids and I sat down to watch the much raved about movie, Juno.

While the girls enjoyed it, I couldn't watch it. I had to leave by ten minutes in. I came back and saw the last 15 minutes...Juno Giving birth to a beautiful son.

I have been trying to figure it out for days...why couldn't I watch it??? Teenage pregnancy breaks my heart. Maybe I could have watched it if I wasn't pregnant myself. I just cannot imagine a child enduring this blessed condition ALONE.

My sister-in-law worked with teen girls in this situation for many years. I was so glad that she was with them to guide them to support them to help them, but it was not glamorous. It was not all sunshine and rainbows. I thanked God for her care and her resolve, but I know I could never do it.

Let me interject that the one HUGE positive in the movie - Juno does not have an abortion. I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage for a person to give up their baby for adoption. I couldn't do that either. Discussing it with one of my girls, neither could she..unless it was to her dad and me. I couldn't imagine that either!

I know these things happen in the real world. I do. I also cannot comprehend why a woman would choose to have a child without a husband.

And yet these things are really commonplace in our society!

Maybe my overwhelming emotions come from my deep seated belief that intimacy belongs in marriage alone. That physical relationship is a treasure, a gift from one person to another. Whether the participants realize it or not, they are bonded together as one. I have never understood "sleeping around." I am very close to just very few people...and those people have changed over time. The one thing I loved about getting married was that I got a best friend that I would have FOREVER..no leaving. "Friends-with-benefits" applies to MARRIAGE! But that is not the way the media portrays it and it makes me so angry!

Dh affectionately says I prefer to live in my non-reality bubble and I hate seeing the real world. I think the real world is a very sad and broken place so I guess he is right. But our "little" family IS my world...and it IS a happy place for the most part. The kids see the world..and live in it, but are not of it. What more can I hope for? That was always my hope for them anyway.
